THE ZEN STORY
ZEN Motorcycles' three founding partners Bruce Crerar, Ben Rubner and Chris Pirola are avid motorcycle enthusiasts with over 30 years in the industry. They created ZEN Motorcycles as a boutique motorcycle dealer, workshop and retail space to service the large Sydney motorcycle community.
The name ZEN was derived in part from the autobiographical novel written by Robert Pirsig, 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle maintenance'. Pirsig describes an unhurried motorcycle ride over two-lane back roads through the North Dakota plains. The narrator conveys the experience of riding his bike as being fully in the world, if you ride a motorcycle you can understand what he is describing. The novel has a lot to say about high quality engagement, indeed the main idea he presents is that this is the secret to a fulfilled life. According to Pirsig, being engaged is a necessary condition for excellence.
We also discovered other interpretations of the word ZEN, which we also felt conveyed the way we wanted our business to be viewed. Zen: simple, easy, tranquil. Adding a bit more “zen” to our life is beneficial to both our brain and our body. ZEN is also slang for feeling peaceful and relaxed. An example of ZEN as an adjective is to have a ZEN experience, which is how you feel during a wonderful day of being out on the back roads on your motorcycle.
